GEOSS Search Engine : GEOPORTAL

It is not in the official news of the GEO (Group on Earth Observations), but the GEOSS Search Engine (GEOPORTAL) was launched !

Derived from ESA's Earth Observation Community Portal (EO Portal), this contribution will put the accent on remote sensing, geospatial-static and in-situ data, with web services information. You can for instance overlay satellite datas to Google Earth !

Another update about the Metaverse project : a workshop conference is organised at Stanford University this 15 february. Objectives : exploring the spectrum of technologies and applications identified in the Roadmap. Functions : augmentation to simulation; and intimate (identity-focused) to external (world-focused), Applications : lifelogging, augmented reality, mirror worlds and virtual worlds. It is not a Roadmap Summit, but rather a further exploration of the ideas, and a chance for people in the field to connect and converse, and to prepare a full Summit in 2009 or 2010.

Scanning the Globe

kmlabs geoss scanning the globe

Contributions to the GEOSS project (GEOSS : Global Earth Observation System of Systems) we already talked about here are being made by the IEEE who leads the effort in developping standards for the 4 core functions :

FUNCTIONS are the following :

- Observation

- Processing

- Storage

- Dissemination

The IEEE is also publishing 2 journals on Earth Observation : earthzine (since DEC 07) and next summer J-STARS (Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observation and Remote Sensing) .  This is Neogeography for Neogeographers !

It seems also the GEOSS search engine we previously talked about into this post has not been launched yet. Any update about this project would be welcome...

Google in the Moon

8ba24be5093018faf6600565629f0fd8.jpgGoogle is teaming since september 2007 with the X Prize foundation to launch a commercial race to the Moon with a $30 million incentive.  To win the Google Lunar X PRIZE, a team must successfully land a privately funded craft on the lunar surface and survive long enough to complete the mission goals of roaming about the lunar surface for at least 500 meters and sending a defined data package, called a “Mooncast”, back to Earth.

0n FT Predict (Financial Times Predict), the games are openned. The Google Lunar X Prise to be won before 2012 can be bet on or off. It is a volatile value.

A quite different subject than the usual prediction games of FT.com like the pakistani national election date or the possible US + Israel Air Strike over Iran prediction date for 2008...

Google Moon already exist. Images are from the NASA, as well as for Google Space. But if you look for Google Lunar, everything is not ready.

If interested, you can join and apply for a job on the moon, at he Google Copernicus Hosting Environment and Experiment in Search Engineering (GCHEESE) !

By Locating a research and technology center on The Moon (Googlunaplex), Google engineers will be able to experiment with an entirely different set of parameters and conditions.

The Googlunaplex will house 35 engineers, 27,000 low cost web servers, 2 massage therapists and a sushi chef formerly employed by the pop group Hanson.
